Commuter bikes are built for all weather performance with full fenders, rack, lights, and chainguards. They are designed to be simple, tough and dependable. A great example is the Specialized Globe City Model.

Hybrids can be split into two categories:

Performance hybrids are designed to be lightweight, fast and comfortable. They Use 700C size wheels. They are primarily street oriented.

Comfort hybrids also use 700C wheels but tend to have suspension systems, more upright seating, and lower gearing. They are truly dual purpose and perfect for the street and rail trail. Comfort bikes tend to have 26" mountain bike size wheels, suspension systems, very upright riding positions, and are ideally suited to rail trail use.
